**Ukraine Newsrooms Get Help from Kyiv Independent**
A fundraising campaign by the Kyiv Independent has raised over $66,200 to help three Ukrainian newsrooms. These newsrooms were affected by a US freeze on foreign aid.
The GoFundMe campaign was launched on January 30 and quickly reached its goal of $50,000. The money will be equally shared among the three newsrooms:
* Tsukr (Sumy, Ukraine) covers stories from near the Russian border. It lost 60% of its funding due to the aid freeze.
* Gwara Media (Kharkiv, Ukraine) reports on war crimes and produces investigative journalism despite Russian attacks.
* MykVisti (Mykolaiv, Ukraine) provides vital information to residents who are frequently targeted by Russian missiles.
The funds will help these newsrooms continue their work for a few months. The money will cover salaries and operations costs.
“We’re grateful for the support of our readers,” said Daryna Shevchenko, CEO of the Kyiv Independent. “We never doubted that they share our values.”
**Why the Help is Needed**
The US aid freeze has affected many humanitarian and media organizations in Ukraine. The newsrooms mentioned above operate in some of the most dangerous regions.
Their CEOs expressed gratitude for the support from their colleagues:
* Dmytro Tishchenko, CEO of Tsukr, said the funds will help them survive this difficult period.
* Another CEO thanked everyone who donated or shared the fundraiser with their communities.
**The Kyiv Independent’s Effort**
The Kyiv Independent itself was not affected by the aid freeze. It no longer receives US taxpayer-funded grants and now relies on small monthly donations from its community.
