Georgia’s Prime Minister, Irakli Kobakhidze, recently spoke to journalists about his plan to make NGOs more transparent. He said that many of these organizations had refused to register even under a relatively mild law.

Kobakhidze believes that copying the American Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) law is the best option for Georgia. This law requires foreign-funded groups to register with the US government and disclose their activities.

The Prime Minister’s comments come after the US government acknowledged that foreign funding had been used in various countries, including Georgia, to organize revolutions and unrest. Kobakhidze sees this as a serious issue that only his government has not spoken about.

He stressed that protecting sovereignty is a national task for Georgia. According to him, no one should have the right to try and change the government through foreign funding of NGOs against the people’s will.
