Georgian Dream’s Leadership Style Worries Experts.
A professor at the Georgian Institute of Public Affairs (GIPA) and a senior researcher at the Brussels European Centre for International Political Economy, Tengiz Pkhaladze, is concerned about the current state of politics in Georgia. He believes that the ruling party “Georgian Dream” is following the same steps that led to authoritarianism in other countries.
“We are in an unprecedented crisis,” said Pkhaladze during a TV appearance. “We’re discussing issues we thought were settled 30 years ago, like human rights and democracy.” He thinks that society’s loyalty to democratic values is being tested.
Pkhaladze also warned that if the government continues to distance itself from the West and liberal democracy, it might form closer ties with countries like Iran and Russia instead. “We’re going backward every day,” he said, adding that it will take a lot of effort for Georgia to return to its previous state.
According to Pkhaladze, “Georgian Dream” is trying to ensure that the worst sanctions are imposed on them by the international community. He believes that the US government, even under Trump’s administration, could review relations with Georgia and impose harsher sanctions on the ruling party.
