Judge Defends Herself Against Sanctions Claim
A lawyer argued that Judge Lela Tsagareishvili should not be part of a trial. He said this because she is on a list of judges who are being punished by another country.
The lawyer, Elguja Avsajanashvili, made his argument during the trial of Revaz Kiknadze. Kiknadze was arrested while protesting for new elections. The police claim he participated in group violence during the protest.
Tsagareishvili agreed to remove herself from the case. She said that her right to defend cases and access information had not been restricted.
The lawyer also complained that the case materials were not provided on time. Tsagareishvili agreed with this and removed herself as well.
Tsagareishvili defended herself against sanctions claims by saying they are a “political decision” from another country. She believes these decisions cannot influence the Georgian judiciary or legal decisions made in Georgia.
