**Switzerland Sold Spy Equipment to Serbia**

A Swiss company has sold a geolocation and eavesdropping system to the Serbian government. This was approved by the Swiss Confederation in 2023.

The equipment, known as IMSI-catchers, can be used to intercept phone signals. It is valued at nearly 2 million Swiss francs (2.11 million euros). The company that supplied the equipment has not been named.

**Use of Spy Equipment**

It is not clear who in Serbia received the spy equipment. However, Amnesty International has revealed that phones of activists and journalists have been infiltrated by Serbian intelligence services using spyware.

The organization claims this is a widespread and systematic practice. The country is currently in crisis due to government corruption and protests against it.

**Regulations**

In Switzerland, selling spy equipment to other countries is not allowed if there is reason to believe it will be used for repression. However, at the time of approval, there was not enough evidence to support this.

The State Secretariat for Economic Affairs said that they did not have any information that would suggest the equipment was intended for use against civilians.
