**Serbian Consumers Protest High Prices**
On January 31, the Efektiva consumer protection association asked people to boycott five major retail chains. The goal was to protest how much money these stores are making.
Dejan Gavrilovic from Efektiva said that instead of shopping at the big stores on Thursday, people should go to small shops and farmers’ markets on Friday. This way, they can support local businesses.
The boycott targets five big retailers in Serbia. Efektiva claims these stores have unfair pricing policies. They say high food prices are not just because of inflation worldwide, but also because of how much money the stores are making from selling goods.
Gavrilovic mentioned that a product made in Serbia costs less in other countries than it does in Serbia itself. He thinks this is not fair and wants people to know about it.
Efektiva had planned to start the boycott earlier, but they waited because the state had spoken out against high prices. They now want to test how much influence consumers have on the government and retailers.
