Council of Europe’s Proposed Version Criticized

The Chairman of the Parliament’s Human Rights Committee, Rati Ionatamishvili, has spoken out against a proposed version in the Council of Europe. He believes that this decision insults both the European Court in Strasbourg and the OSCE/ODIHR mission.

Ionatamishvili thinks that the Council of Europe should reconsider this decision because it will damage the organization’s reputation. “The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe cannot make a decision that contradicts both the European Court in Strasbourg and the OSCE/ODIHR reports,” he said.

He also criticized the opposition for their role in the matter. According to him, they are a group of people who try to harm Georgia every time. “They act against our country in Brussels, and now in Strasbourg,” Ionatamishvili said.

The Council of Europe’s Monitoring Committee has proposed two options regarding Georgia. One option is conditional recognition of the Georgian delegation’s mandates. This would happen if Georgian officials meet certain conditions by April 2025, such as working with the opposition and civil society to create a democratic electoral environment.

The other option is non-recognition of the Georgian delegation’s mandates without any conditions being met.
