EU Plans New Trade Rules with Ukraine

The European Union does not plan to keep the current trade agreement framework with Ukraine after it expires on June 5. Instead, they are thinking of a new set of rules.

These new rules would include limits on how much Ukrainian agricultural products can be exported and imported into the EU. This might help Ukraine join the EU’s single market while also helping European farmers who have been worried about cheaper Ukrainian products threatening their businesses.

The EU lifted taxes on Ukrainian food in 2022 to help Ukraine’s economy during Russia’s war. But this led to big protests among European farmers, especially in Poland. They said the cheap Ukrainian products were hurting their businesses.

The European Union’s Agriculture Commissioner, Christophe Hansen, said many agriculture ministers agree that it would be better to switch to a more stable trade agreement with Ukraine instead of keeping the current one. The EU and Ukraine have already started talking about this new framework, and they will discuss it formally soon.
