**Georgian Delegation Credentials Challenged at European Assembly**

The credentials of the Georgian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) have been challenged on substantive grounds. This happened on the first day of the 2025 winter plenary session.

According to PACE’s rules, a delegation’s credentials can be challenged if there is a “serious violation of the basic principles of the Council of Europe” or a “persistent failure to honor obligations and commitments”. The challenger, Boriana Åberg from Sweden, said that Georgia’s parliament is dominated by one party, the Georgian Dream, and that this undermines democracy in the country.

**Challenge Received**

The challenge received enough support to be considered. Now, PACE’s Monitoring Committee has 24 hours to report on the matter. The Assembly will then vote on what to do next. There are three options: to ratify the credentials as is, not to ratify them at all, or to ratify them but with some restrictions.

**What Does This Mean?**

The Georgian delegation’s members can still sit and participate in meetings until a decision is made. However, they cannot vote on matters related to their own credentials. The other countries’ delegations were able to confirm their credentials without any issues.
