Italian Troops Arrive in Kosovo to Support NATO Mission
A group of Italian soldiers has arrived in Kosovo to support the NATO-led KFOR mission. The troops, over 200 strong, are from Italy’s mechanized infantry brigade Sassari.
The deployment is temporary and aimed at strengthening KFOR’s presence in Kosovo. According to KFOR, the Italian soldiers will work alongside local troops to maintain security during the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for February 9.
KFOR commander General Enrico Barduani recently expressed concerns about the situation in Kosovo. He said it was peaceful but sensitive, with a risk of escalation at any moment. The general also mentioned a recent attack on the Ibar-Lepenac water canal as an example of the security challenges facing Kosovo.
The KFOR mission is working closely with local authorities and the international community to ensure stability ahead of the elections. If needed, NATO can quickly send additional troops from its reserve forces to support the KFOR mission.
