Let me be crystal clear, as European Union, we do not support any political party in Georgia. We condemn violence and we call for dialogue, because the only way out of the very deep and aggravating political crisis in Georgia is dialogue, – said the EU Ambassador to Georgia, Pawel Herczyński.
According to him, by granting candidate country status, the EU has opened the door to Georgia’s membership.
“But in order for this to happen, Georgia needs gradually to become one of us, and for this, the key prerequisite is to adopt laws that we have in the European Union.
Since the historic moment, from December 2023, unfortunately, the Georgian authorities decided not to adopt the laws existing in the EU, but to adopt laws that contrary to the EU rules, EU regulations, EU principles,” the Ambassador noted.
According to him, the so-called Foreign Influence Transparency Act and the Foreign Agents Act, which are copies of the American law, have nothing in common with European legislation.
“Among other things, a few days ago the Venice Commission, which is a body of the Council of Europe, in its latest legal opinion, which covers more than 20 pages, stated very clearly that these laws are not only contrary to the European legislation, but are actually contradicting Georgia’s own responsibilities before the Council of Europe. This is a sad reality that over a year and a half, many different laws have been introduced in Georgia, not only the transparency law, FARA, but also the law on grants, law on broadcasting and many others. Practically every day there are new and new laws that are being introduced or amended and that go contrary to the principles upon which European Union is founded. And I am very sorry to say this, but as Vice-President Kaja Kallas stated loudly and clearly last Monday, with these laws, it will be impossible for Georgia to become a member of the European Union. I am very sorry to say this so openly and directly,” the ambassador noted.
