According to Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, a lawsuit regarding the banning of parties will be filed with the Constitutional Court tomorrow or on Monday at the latest.
Kobakhidze made this statement to journalists.
“Probably tomorrow, I’m not sure. As you know, parliamentarians are filing the lawsuit. It will be submitted to the court either tomorrow or at the latest on Monday,” Kobakhidze stated.
For reference, on October 16, the Parliament approved a legislative package that prohibits specific individuals from engaging in party activities, holding political office, and participating in elections.
The amendments were reflected in the Organic Law “On the Constitutional Court,” the Organic Law “On Political Associations of Citizens,” the “Election Code,” and the “Criminal Code.”
According to the legislative changes, if the Constitutional Court decides to ban a specific party, members of the banned party and individuals associated with it will lose the ability to exercise passive electoral rights—they will no longer be able to be elected to Parliament or municipal bodies. Additionally, they will be restricted from holding leadership positions in constitutional bodies, will be unable to become members of other parties, and will also be prohibited from acting as donors to other parties.
