Georgia no longer possesses one of the main attributes of statehood, foreign policy – it has died, according to a statement by Georgia’s third President, Mikheil Saakashvili, which was shared on his social media page.
According to Saakashvili, it is now impossible to evaluate Georgia’s foreign policy.
“Georgia had a foreign policy during Gamsakhurdia’s time, much more so during Shevardnadze’s presidency, and during my time, Georgia became a significant international player.
Now, it is impossible to evaluate Georgia’s foreign policy – you cannot evaluate something that does not exist. The only thing possible is to acknowledge the death of Georgia’s foreign policy.
The point is that during the Soviet Union, the Georgian SSR had a Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It was housed in a few rooms of the old Plekhanov building. The minister was named Gogi Javakhishvili.
As a student at the Institute of International Relations at Kyiv University, I completed a two-month internship there. During the internship, I became convinced that the ministry did absolutely nothing.
Today, just like back then, Georgia has a foreign affairs agency located in an even larger old building, and just like back then, it does nothing.
Georgia no longer possesses one of the main attributes of statehood, foreign policy – it has died,” writes Mikheil Saakashvili.
