I received an offer from a private international university for the position of rector. I decided to accept this position – although there were rumors, the lawsuit [on the ban on party activities for specific individuals] has not yet been filed with the court, it may not even have been considered during my term of office, – Irina Imerlishvili told InterpressNews, explaining why she left the position of a judge at the Constitutional Court.
According to her, given that she had 11 months left to serve as a judge at the Constitutional Court, she decided to continue her work as rector.
“I will explain to you that the Constitutional Court is not a court where judges are appointed for life. The Constitution itself tells us that a person can be appointed as a judge only once and only for a term of 10 years. Accordingly, I had 11 months left before the expiration of my term of office, I received an offer from a private international university for the position of the rector, and therefore, I decided to accept this position. This is BAU International University, located in Batumi. At this stage, it is fully taught in a foreign language, although I plan to do a Georgian-language master’s degree in the future, in several programs. The majority of students, 95%, are foreigners,” said Irina Imerlishvili.
According to her, her departure from the position of judge is not related to the lawsuit planned in the Constitutional Court regarding the ban on individual political entities.
According to Irina Imerlishvili, the lawsuit has not yet been filed with the court, and if it had been filed, the consideration of the lawsuit in question might even not have even been made during her term of office.
“The Constitutional Court is not a court that quickly considers and makes decisions quickly. Accordingly, the lawsuit that was rumored about has not yet been filed with the court. Whether the court will accept it for proceedings or not, and then when it will consider it – everything has its deadline, and this is not a small one. This is a 9-month deadline, and it might not even have been considered during my term of office. Accordingly, the reason for leaving my position was the offer from the university. I teach at another, private university, I am a full professor, doctor, and accordingly, I made the decision to accept this offer precisely because I had very little time left,” Irina Imerlishvili said.
For information, according to the information of the Constitutional Court, Irine Imerlishvili, based on her own application, has had her authority as a judge of the Constitutional Court terminated early. “The authority of the Judge of the Constitutional Court of Georgia, Ms. Irine Imerlishvili, based on her own application, by the Resolution of the Constitutional Court No. 2, dated October 20, 2025, has been terminated early as of October 20, 2025. The Constitutional Court of Georgia wishes her success in her future activities,” the information released by the court reads.
