In connection with the events that took place in Tbilisi on October 4, law enforcement officers have detained 16 more individuals.
This was announced by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Gela Geladze, during a briefing held at the Ministry.
According to him, a total of 62 people have been detained so far in relation to the October 4 case.
“As the public is aware, the Central Criminal Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs is conducting an intensive investigation to identify and prosecute those individuals who committed illegal and criminal acts on October 4 in Tbilisi — specifically, those who attempted, through violent means, to seize the residence of the President of Georgia and overthrow the constitutional order, during which dozens of law enforcement officers were injured.
In connection with this criminal case, today we have detained 16 more individuals — T.K., G.T., D.G., M.M., I.G., A.T., A.V., G.K., G.T., G.J., D.G., K.CH., M.T., R.J., S.M., and J.T.
As of now, within the ongoing investigation, a total of 62 people have been detained.
Criminal prosecution has also been launched against two individuals abroad — Irakli Shaishmelashvili and A.U.
Some of the detainees are charged with calling for the violent overthrow or change of Georgia’s constitutional order, attempting to seize or block strategic or critically important facilities, organizing or participating in group violence, while others are charged with violence against law enforcement officers.
As for the two individuals abroad who are being prosecuted, one of them is Irakli Shaishmelashvili, who is charged with calling for the violent overthrow of the constitutional order and the overthrow of state authority.
Based on the evidence we have obtained, including video materials, it has been determined that the detainees, along with the organizers of the rally, demolished the fences surrounding the President’s residence on Atoneli Street and attempted to seize the building. As a result of the unlawful and violent actions of the demonstrators, 35 police officers were injured, most of them suffering head injuries.
We continue to carry out investigative actions to identify and bring to justice other individuals involved in these crimes.
Once again, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the law enforcement officers for protecting public safety and order with a very high standard of professionalism during the events of October 4.
Everyone clearly saw that each representative of the Ministry’s police units acted in full compliance with the law and to the highest professional standard — this was a precisely and correctly conducted police operation, which prevented an attempt to overthrow the state.
The coordinated actions of our police officers and the employees of the Special State Protection Service once again proved that Georgia’s law enforcement system is strong and well-organized.
Thanks to the highest professionalism of our officers, we were able to ensure the safety of citizens and the stability of the country.
We will act with the utmost strictness against anyone who attempts to undermine our country’s stability or the rule of law. Anyone who stands against the state or raises a hand against law enforcement will be held fully accountable under the law,” said the Minister of Internal Affairs.
