Every country that claims to be a democracy takes care to have a defensible democracy, which means that there is no place for parties that are enemies of democracy in the democratic process – to file a lawsuit with the Constitutional Court, this is our obligation, behind which is the mandate given by people, – the Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia, Shalva Papuashvili, said about the lawsuit related to the declaration of parties as unconstitutional.
According to him, several political groups, including the National Movement, have already put themselves beyond the limits of the democratic opposition by not participating in the elections and intending to overthrow the government on October 4.
“If we want Georgian democracy to survive, Georgian democracy to develop, we must not leave space for radical anti-constitutional forces, and this is what the constitutional lawsuit serves, backed by one million one hundred and twenty thousand voters who supported this very idea in last year’s elections. The goal is precisely to protect our democracy from radical, extremist, anti-constitutional forces. As for the insinuations – an extremist force cannot be the opposition, they contradict each other, extremists are extremists, and several political groups, including the National Movement, have already placed themselves beyond the limits of the democratic opposition by not participating in the elections, by intending to overthrow the government on October 4. So, the National Movement and other similar groups in alliance with it are not the opposition, they are extremist, anti-constitutional, radical groups. Our goal is to file a lawsuit with the Constitutional Court, this is our obligation, which is based on the mandate given by the people. Then the Constitutional Court will judge who owns what, who does not own, who violated or did not violate,” Papuashvili said.
