The legislative package [which bans specific individuals from party activities, holding political office, and participating in elections] is specifically Ivanishvili’s punishment, but I believe he will also ban and repress the parties that participated in the so-called local self-government elections, said Khatia Dekanoidze, one of the leaders of the United National Movement, in response to the Parliament’s support for the legislative package in its first reading. The package prohibits specific individuals from engaging in party activities, holding political office, and participating in elections.
According to Dekanoidze, “Georgian Dream” intends to adopt laws that “even Russia doesn’t have.”
“There has never been such legislation in Russia, where people are banned from political activities and are practically ‘canceled’ by the regime. There is no force that can silence us. This is not about a form or a signature, about what I can or cannot do—it’s simply Ivanishvili’s punishment specifically targeting the previous government. But I believe he will also ban and repress the parties that participated in the so-called local self-government elections,” Dekanoidze stated.
According to Dekanoidze, the situation in the country will soon become extremely dire.
“People are in prison; Georgia has over a hundred political prisoners. We are in a dire situation; the fascist regime is on the verge of pinning a ‘yellow star’ on us, and it will do so very soon, targeting specific individuals.
Very soon, the situation will be extremely dire. It was exactly the same in Belarus, but in Belarus, it happened much more slowly. Here, it’s happening much faster. What worries the regime is the unity and coordination of people, the Rustaveli protests, various forms of protests, marches, and demonstrations. That’s why, for me, it’s very important now that all this continues so that the delegitimization of the regime persists. Everything else is secondary,” Dekanoidze stated.
