When assessing processes in a country, it is very important that these processes be assessed objectively, – Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili said at the press conference held with the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen.
According to Maka Botchorishvili, when talking about the need for the strength of democratic institutions, attention should also be paid to the “attacks” that are being carried out on the functioning of democratic institutions, such as the parliament and the institution of the president.
“When we talk about the need for the strength of democratic institutions, we should not ignore the attacks that are being carried out on the functioning of democratic institutions, such as the parliament, among them, the institution of the president, and all those institutions in the creation of which civil society participates, when they go to the elections and elect the government by their own decision.
I absolutely agree with my colleague that in a democratic state, people, citizens, voters, who make choices, are truly crucial, and we are all obliged to protect their choices and respect the democratic institutions that are chosen as a result of their choices. In the context of this respect, we also [must] have a clearly formulated position that it is not normal for a democratic state to turn a blind eye to the attacks on democratic institutions. The rule of law in a democratic state is equal for everyone, the same for everyone, no matter who they are,” said Maka Botchorishvili.
