The visit of the MEPs serves to express support to the Georgian people – of course, we discussed the need to impose sanctions on Ivanishvili and his entourage, – the chairwoman of the United National Movement, Tina Bokuchava, said after a meeting with a delegation of MEPs from the Social Democratic Party.
According to her, they are actively working to ensure that visa-free travel is not suspended for citizens and “only affects Ivanishvili, his entourage and propagandists.”
“The visit of the MEPs serves to express support to the Georgian people, who are fighting for the European flag and values. Of course, we also discussed the need to impose sanctions on Ivanishvili and his entourage.
You know, I personally was actively involved in the efforts to ensure that Georgian citizens are not punished for Ivanishvili’s autocratic steps, that the cancellation of visa-free travel is not carried out in a so-called blanket manner, that is, it does not affect all citizens, but only Ivanishvili, his entourage, propagandists, financial elite, abusers, false witnesses, so-called judges. I think our work in this direction is very fruitful and I hope that this mechanism will be implemented soon,” Bokuchava noted.
In addition, according to her, work is underway in the UK to impose sanctions on representatives of the Georgian Dream.
“The UK, which we know is no longer a member of the EU. At the national level, they have the national prerogative to impose individual sanctions. We want to see more sanctions, faster and at higher echelons. This takes time. I assure you, work on this issue is underway in the UK very intensively,” Bokuchava noted.
A meeting with other opposition parties is also planned today. Representatives of Gakharia – For Georgia will meet with the delegation members at 11:30. The meeting will discuss recent developments in the country.
The Social Democratic Party of the European Parliament delegation also met with members of civil society yesterday. A meeting with the fifth President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, is scheduled today.
