Political persecution in Georgia must end and political prisoners must be released, Gustaf Göthberg said in his speech during a debate on Georgia at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).
He said the current situation in Georgia is a “Georgian nightmare” inspired by the Kremlin’s plan.
“The current situation in Georgia is worrying. The political persecution we are seeing is not the European way. It is a “Georgian nightmare” inspired by the Kremlin’s nightmarish action plan,” Gottber said.
He said that despite the arrests of opposition leaders, the brutality and authoritarianism we are seeing from the “false leader Ivanishvili,” the vast majority of the Georgian people are showing that they want freedom, the rule of law and democracy.
He said that “Georgians are Europeans and they want to be part of Europe.”
“The Council of Europe and the Parliamentary Assembly must protect their rights. Georgia may not be in the geographical center of Europe, but its people want to live in a free and democratic state. That is why urgent action is needed. We also note with concern that local elections are being held in Georgia on Saturday, where no international observers will be present. Political persecution must end, political prisoners must be released, independent media must be guaranteed, and police brutality must be independently investigated,” Gottberg noted.
