“The NGOs funded by millionaires say they won’t go to the elections—this is clear evidence of how the money was spent,” stated Shalva Papuashvili, the Speaker of the Parliament, to journalists.
According to his statement, certain NGOs are “enemies of democracy, and their goal is to obstruct the exercise of voting rights in these elections.”
“What they called ‘strengthening democracy’ has been revealed by their attitude toward democratic processes and elections. These are groups whose task is to seize power. In this case, their purpose was to provide their financiers with levers of power in Georgia. Last year, before the 2024 parliamentary elections, all these NGOs were involved in campaigns or events—’Go vote, participate in the elections, I’m going to the elections,’ and so on. Millions were spent on this, foreign money. This year, they say going to the elections is supposedly a personal matter. In reality, through these organizations, with foreign funding, we do not have supporters and strengtheners of democracy but anti-democratic organizations whose main goal is to seize power levers and share them with their financiers. This is the moment when they themselves have admitted that these organizations are enemies of democracy, and their goal is to obstruct the exercise of voting rights in these elections,” Papuashvili stated.
According to the Speaker of the Parliament, when “embassies or donor organizations start complaining about funding, throw this information in their faces that the organizations they fund are enemies of democracy in Georgia.”
“Let us all remember this, and when various embassies or donor organizations start talking or complaining about funding, print this out and throw it in their faces that the organizations they fund are enemies of democracy in Georgia. They do not recognize democratic instruments but instead seek to seize power by bypassing democracy,” Papuashvili stated.
