In the so-called sabotage case, Eka Gigauri, the head of Transparency International, will be questioned before a magistrate judge today. Gigauri has already arrived at the court.
As she told journalists, the case is absurd, and the investigation’s goal is to intimidate non-governmental organizations.
“I was summoned in the so-called diaper case. That the case is absurd is beyond question.
In our case, neither our accounts have been frozen nor have we bought diapers, but the absurdity is indicated by the fact that it is impossible to harm the state by purchasing diapers.
This is not the main thing for the investigation – the main goal of the investigation is to intimidate the non-governmental sector and do everything possible so that we do not fight for our country’s European future, do not protect citizens who fight for the country’s European future.
For many years, we have been helping citizens whose rights are violated by the state through legal consultations. This is exactly what irritates the state today – they want our citizens to be left without protection, but this will not happen, and we will continue our activities,” Eka Gigauri stated before entering the court.
Based on the Prosecutor’s Office’s motion, the Tbilisi City Court decided to freeze the bank accounts of seven non-governmental organizations: “Fair Elections,” “Institute for the Development of Freedom of Information,” “Defenders of Democracy,” “Georgian Democratic Initiative,” “Sapari,” and “Social Justice Center.”
The case concerns an investigation underway at the Prosecutor’s Office into sabotage, an attempt at sabotage under aggravating circumstances, assistance in hostile activities for foreign organizations and organizations subordinate to foreign control, and mobilizing finances for activities directed against the constitutional order of Georgia and the foundations of national security. The Prosecutor’s Office has summoned the heads of individual non-governmental organizations for questioning as witnesses.
