According to circulated information, among the seven individuals detained by the Investigative Service of Georgia’s Ministry of Finance for illegal production of alcohol and duty-free cigarettes are former boxer and businessman Giorgi Kandelaki, as well as Borna Gogichaishvili, a member of the Gori Municipal Council.
The agency does not disclose information about the detained individuals, stating that it is personal information.
For reference, employees of the Investigative Service of the Ministry of Finance seized an unprecedented quantity of 75,137 bottles of alcoholic beverages and 318,000 packs of duty-free cigarettes. Seven individuals involved in the crime were detained.
“The investigation established that the accused had been operating an illegal alcohol production factory in the Shida Kartli region for years, where various Georgian and foreign branded alcoholic beverages were illegally bottled and sold in a makeshift manner. From one of the warehouses on the factory’s adjacent territory, 318,000 packs of duty-free ‘KARELIA’ cigarettes were also seized. Additionally, technical equipment intended for cigarette packaging and production was seized. The estimated value of the seized duty-free alcoholic beverages and cigarettes may amount to tens of millions, which will ultimately be determined by relevant expertise conducted in the case.
The investigation is ongoing under Part 3 of Article 196 and Part 4 of Article 200 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which provide for imprisonment from 7 to 10 years as a penalty,” the agency states.
