“Germany and I are grateful for the love and support shown by this petition,” said Peter Fischer, the German Ambassador to Georgia, in response to a petition by Georgia’s civil and academic society expressing special gratitude to the Federal Republic of Germany and solidarity with Ambassador Peter Fischer.
“The text demonstrates how much Germany and Georgia have achieved together over the past 30 years. We have made great progress toward a shared vision. Let’s protect this and continue moving forward together,” the ambassador wrote on social media.
As a reminder, Georgia’s civil and academic society is circulating a petition to express special gratitude to the Federal Republic of Germany and solidarity with Ambassador Peter Fischer.
“We, representatives of Georgia’s civil and academic society, observe with great concern the recent public attacks against the German Ambassador, Mr. Peter Fischer.
For several decades, Germany has been one of Georgia’s most important partners. It is hard to find a Georgian citizen who has not felt Germany’s support – whether through the improvement of water supply systems in Batumi and the Adjara region, scholarships for students and researchers funded by German taxpayers, programs supporting small businesses, or initiatives to strengthen local self-governance.
We are well aware that Germany has supported our country in numerous significant areas – politically, economically, and socially:
Through projects by GIZ, KfW, and the German Federal Foreign Office, which promote the development of public services, legal reforms, democracy, independent media, and civil society, as well as infrastructure, energy supply, vocational education, and agricultural development; through the activities of political foundations that have supported party pluralism, political education, and public discourse for years; through assistance in health, environmental protection, culture, and science, as well as scholarships for students and researchers, particularly through DAAD; and finally, through Germany’s clear political support for Georgia’s path to European Union membership. Without this support, Georgia’s infrastructural development, institutional strengthening, and creation of new opportunities for youth would not have been possible on this scale. For this, Georgia is grateful to the German people.
Mr. Peter Fischer is a symbol of this partnership in Georgia. His open support for democracy, the rule of law, and European integration represents the values that unite Georgia and Germany. The recent threats against him, including raising the issue of his possible expulsion, are, for us, an attack not only on the ambassador himself but also on the decades-long friendship between Georgia and Germany.
We express our solidarity with Ambassador Peter Fischer and convey our special gratitude to the Federal Republic of Germany. We call on the Georgian authorities to respect diplomatic protocol, cease attacks against foreign diplomats, and recognize Germany’s invaluable contribution to Georgia’s democratic and European development.
Georgia needs strong partners, not confrontation!
We stand firmly by our European friends and defend the values that make Georgia an inseparable part of the European family,” the petition states.
