The government of “Georgian Dream,” which rigged the elections, is dragging the Georgian people toward dictatorship, stated Congressman Joe Wilson, co-chair of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, during a hearing titled “From Partner to Problem: Georgia’s Anti-American Shift.”
According to Wilson, “Georgian Dream” lacks legitimacy and has turned Georgia into a “laboratory of authoritarian control.”
Speaking about the ongoing discussions at the Helsinki Commission, Wilson noted that “Georgian Dream” is closely collaborating with “war criminal Putin.”
He stated that the hearing would examine how far Georgia has fallen under “Georgian Dream” and what this means for American security and interests. It would also explore the tools available to the U.S. to respond, hold “Georgian Dream” accountable, and stand firmly by the Georgian people.
The “Georgian Dream” government, which falsified elections, is pulling the Georgian people toward dictatorship, stripping away sovereignty, condemning them to poverty, and betraying the country’s traditional allies, including the United States. This undermines the good-faith support provided by the U.S., which has invested heavily over decades to help Georgia build a free, prosperous, and democratic state.
“What we see today is the unraveling of this progress by a corrupt regime that lacks legitimacy. ‘Georgian Dream’ came to power through rigged elections. Its rule is one-party. It has imprisoned opposition leaders, beaten and tortured peaceful protesters, silenced independent media, and turned Georgia into a laboratory of authoritarian control. It is rapidly aligning itself with the likes of Belarus and the Russian Federation.
This betrayal does not stop there. ‘Georgian Dream’ has chosen to align with the Chinese Communist Party, opening the door to Chinese influence in Georgia’s economy and infrastructure. Most significantly, it has handed over its Black Sea port to the Chinese Communist Party, blocking American businesses from strategic trade routes and tying Georgia’s future to a regime openly preparing for confrontation with the American people. At the same time, it closely collaborates with war criminal Putin, assisting Moscow in evading sanctions and reselling its oil, even as Russia continues to illegally occupy 20% of Georgia’s territory.
Let us be clear: ‘Georgian Dream’ does not represent the Georgian people. Time and again, the Georgian people have held massive demonstrations, demanding democracy, sovereignty, and a return to a future of peace and prosperity alongside the West.
But today, their aspirations are being crushed by a small group of oligarchs and autocrats who are accountable not to the Georgian people but to the Chinese Communist Party in Beijing, war criminal Putin in Moscow, and they also spend time with the dictatorial regime in Tehran.
This hearing will examine how far Georgia has fallen under ‘Georgian Dream’ and what this means for American security and interests. We will also discuss the tools available to the U.S. in response, including the bipartisan ‘MEGOBARI Act,’ to hold ‘Georgian Dream’ accountable and stand firmly by the Georgian people,” Wilson declared.
