The Chairman of the Gori Municipal Council voiced the “Georgian Dream’s” Russian narrative, and for impeachment to proceed, signatures from Gakharia’s representatives are necessary if they want to prove themselves as true opposition.
According to Giorgi Botkoveli, the public has judged “the shameful, traitorous statement we heard from the Chairman of the Gori Municipal Council, which surprised no one.”
“We have heard numerous statements from him that directly align with the Russian narrative and the position held by the so-called current government. He voiced the position of ‘Georgian Dream,’ which we constantly hear, and it is noteworthy that this is being done by the Chairman of the Gori Municipal Council, a war-torn city’s council chairman, who is directly carrying out Ivanishvili’s orders. This is their true face.
As for the impeachment procedure, we started it yesterday. We have 9 council members, but this issue requires 12 votes. With a real opposition, 12 votes are possible. We have been waiting for two days for representatives of ‘Gakharia for Georgia.’ Initially, they refused; then, it seemed we were blamed for their refusal, and afterward, they supposedly corrected themselves and issued a statement. But by evening, these people disappeared and failed to sign the document necessary to proceed with the impeachment procedure.
Therefore, they still have time, and if they want to present themselves as an opposition party to anyone, they should promptly sign the document so we can start the procedures on time,” Botkoveli stated.
For context, according to the “United National Movement” faction in the Gori Municipal Council, legal procedures for the impeachment of Gori Municipal Council Chairman David Razmadze have been initiated.
As Beka Korchilava, a member of the “United National Movement” in the Gori Municipal Council, told Interpressnews, the reason is the statements made by David Razmadze in an interview with The New York Times.
For information, David Razmadze, Chairman of the Gori Municipal Council, stated in an interview with The New York Times: “The Russians came here as peacekeepers, and thank God they did, because Misha’s thugs were looting the entire city.” Razmadze’s interview is part of an extensive article by the American publication about Georgia, titled “How Georgia Fell From the Vanguard of Democracy to the Front Line of Autocracy.” The New York Times notes that in the interview, the Chairman of the Gori Municipal Council blamed the 2008 August Russian aggression on Georgia’s third president, Mikheil Saakashvili.
