Unfortunately, unjust pressure is being exerted on our country, to which Georgia, naturally, will not submit.
David Matikashvili, Chairman of the Procedural Issues and Rules Committee of the Parliament, made this assessment regarding a statement by 51 deputies of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, who declared that “if Georgia does not change its authoritarian course, they will call on the Assembly and the Committee of Ministers to initiate the process of Georgia’s expulsion.”
According to Matikashvili, this is not the first time the Georgian government has faced unjust and baseless accusations from the Council of Europe.
“Unfortunately, this is not the first instance where we receive such unjust and baseless accusations from the Council of Europe, grounded not on one but on multiple standards, without any real basis. If any party is at fault in undermining these relations, it is clearly, first and foremost, the side that unjustly and groundlessly demanded specific decisions from Georgia that do not reflect the will and desire of the Georgian people,” Matikashvili stated.
He noted that various EU institutions are calling for the annulment of elections, which, in his assessment, were conducted entirely fairly.
“The OSCE/ODIHR stated that the elections were held fairly, in a fair environment, and that the elections took place with the government duly elected. Despite all this, they have trampled on the OSCE/ODIHR’s conclusions, disregarded the statements and conclusions of their own system regarding the elections, and demanded decisions from the Georgian people that do not align with their will and desire. Therefore, it is clear that, unfortunately, unjust pressure is being exerted on our country, to which Georgia, naturally, will not submit,” Matikashvili stated.
In response to a journalist’s question about the responsibility the government feels regarding such a significant statement, David Matikashvili replied that “the decision of the Georgian people holds the greatest importance for them.”
“First and foremost, for our country, for Georgia as a sovereign democratic state, the decision made by the Georgian people and Georgia itself is what matters. The Georgian people made a decision in the 2024 parliamentary elections, which was supported by the OSCE/ODIHR’s conclusion, stating that the elections took place and were fair,” Matikashvili stated.
