**Over $1 Billion Secured for US Weapons Via NATO Program, Zelensky Says**
In a major breakthrough, President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine announced on August 5 that more than $1 billion has been pledged by European NATO partners to purchase U.S.-made weapons for his country. This funding comes as part of a new initiative launched by NATO to accelerate arms procurement for Kyiv.
The program, known as the NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine (NSATU), allows member countries to finance high-priority U.S. weapons deliveries directly through NATO’s Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA). Launched after the NATO Summit in July, this initiative is designed to speed up the procurement process and get essential equipment to Ukraine as quickly as possible.
According to Zelensky, he had a positive conversation with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte on August 5. During their call, they discussed Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities, including Kharkiv, and efforts to expand military and diplomatic support for Ukraine. Rutte confirmed the funding in his own post, saying it was essential to save lives and help Ukraine defend itself.
The funding comes from a variety of sources, with Sweden, Norway, and Denmark announcing a joint contribution of $500 million on August 5. Denmark is pledging about $90 million, Sweden $275 million, and Norway $135 million. The Netherlands had previously committed €579 million (approximately $673 million) to the initiative.
“This funding is evidence that NATO’s new defense initiative is working,” Zelensky said in a statement. “We are grateful for the support of our European partners and look forward to continued cooperation.”
The NSATU program was created after the NATO Summit in Washington, D.C. in July 2024. It coordinates the provision of military equipment and training to Ukraine by NATO allies and partner countries.
In related news, Swedish Defense Minister Mikael Damon said that speed is critical in this effort. “That’s why we’ve decided to allocate funds to the initiative immediately,” he stated.
