**Deadly Attack on Kyiv: Ukraine Calls for Stronger Sanctions on Russia**
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged the international community to impose tougher sanctions on Russia following a devastating attack on the capital city of Kyiv. The assault, which occurred on Thursday, resulted in the deaths of at least 31 people, including five children as young as two years old. A further 159 people were wounded, with 16 children among them.
The attack saw Russian forces launch more than 300 drones and eight cruise missiles, causing widespread destruction to a hospital, school, nursery, and university. This was one of the deadliest attacks on Kyiv since Russia launched its large-scale invasion in February 2022. Zelensky emphasized that sanctions do have an effect, despite what the Kremlin may claim, and must be strengthened.
**US Support for Ukraine**
In response to the attack, US President Donald Trump condemned Russia’s actions, calling them “disgusting.” He hinted that new sanctions against Moscow were on the way. Senior US diplomat John Kelley echoed this sentiment, urging Russia and Ukraine to negotiate a ceasefire and durable peace. “It is time to make a deal,” he said.
Ukrainian officials reported receiving positive signals from the US about potential new sanctions, particularly targeting Russian oil and secondary markets. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha praised Trump for being “generous and patient” but emphasized that now was the time to put maximum pressure on Moscow.
**Germany’s Pledge**
In a show of support for Ukraine, Germany pledged to deliver two additional US-made Patriot air defense systems in the coming days. This move is seen as a significant boost to Ukraine’s defenses against Russian aggression.
**Zelensky’s Call to Action**
President Zelensky emphasized that every day matters and that this conflict can only be stopped through joint efforts from global actors, including America, Europe, and others. He highlighted the staggering number of Russian attacks on Ukraine in July alone, which included over 5,100 glide bombs, 3,800 Shahed drones, and 260 missiles.
