**Russia Warns of Caution with Nuclear Rhetoric as Tensions with US Escalate**
In a statement on August 4, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov urged caution when using “nuclear rhetoric,” following a series of inflammatory comments from Russian leaders. This comes as tensions between the US and Russia continue to rise over the conflict in Ukraine.
Peskov told Russian state media that Russia is very attentive to the topic of nuclear non-proliferation, and believes everyone should be cautious with nuclear rhetoric. His statement was made in response to a series of threats from former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who has claimed that increased involvement from Washington could bring the US and Moscow closer to direct conflict.
**US and Russia Engage in Nuclear Threats**
Medvedev’s comments have been met with a stern response from US President Donald Trump. Trump announced an August 8 deadline for Russia to reach a ceasefire with Ukraine, warning that failure to comply would result in US secondary sanctions. These measures could impose tariffs on Moscow’s trading partners, including Brazil, China, and India.
In response to Medvedev’s threats, Trump ordered two US nuclear-powered submarines to be repositioned to “appropriate regions.” Peskov has claimed that these submarines are always on alert, but denied any interest in escalating tension between the two nations.
**Russian Leaders Threaten Nuclear Escalation**
This is not the first time Russian leaders have threatened nuclear escalation. In April, Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu claimed Russia reserves the right to use nuclear weapons if faced with “unfriendly actions.” Similarly, Medvedev has repeatedly warned of nuclear consequences and spread Kremlin propaganda portraying Russia as the victim of Western aggression.
As tensions continue to rise, it remains to be seen whether either side will back down from their nuclear threats. One thing is certain: the world holds its breath as these two superpowers engage in a high-stakes game of diplomatic brinksmanship.
