**Gazan Boy Receives Life-Changing Treatment in the UK**
A 15-year-old boy from Gaza, Majd Al-Shaghnobi, has arrived in London for medical treatment after suffering severe injuries during a conflict in his home region. Majd was trying to obtain humanitarian aid when an Israeli tank shell struck nearby, shattering his jaw and injuring his leg.
Majd’s story is a testament to the devastating effects of war on civilians, particularly children. He spent several months in hospital in Gaza, where he received life-saving treatment for his injuries. However, due to the destruction of healthcare facilities in Gaza, Majd was evacuated to Egypt for further medical care in February this year.
Now, with the help of a team of medical professionals and private donations, Majd has arrived in the UK to undergo surgery at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital in London. This is a significant milestone, as it marks the first time a Gazan child has received treatment in the UK for war-related injuries.
**A Long-Overdue Effort**
Professor Noor ul Owase Jeelani, the lead surgeon on Majd’s case, expressed regret that it took so long for a child from Gaza to receive treatment in the UK. “As a physician and as a person, I don’t understand why it has taken us more than 20 months to reach this stage,” he said.
However, with Project Pure Hope, a charity set up by medical professionals in November 2023, Majd’s case is just the beginning. The project aims to bring 30 critically injured Gazan children to the UK for treatment. While time is of the essence, the arrival of these children marks a vital step towards providing them with the care they need.
**The Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza**
Majd’s story is not an isolated incident. Dozens of Gazans have been killed while seeking food or medical attention during the ongoing conflict. Widespread malnutrition, starvation, and disease are driving a rise in hunger-related deaths among the 2.1 million Palestinians in Gaza.
Rama, another Gazan child who arrived in London with Majd, shared her own experiences of living under occupation. “There aren’t any bombs or fear here,” she said. However, despite being safe, Rama’s friends from Gaza are struggling to survive, with some going hungry for days and sleeping on the streets.
