**US Approves $172 Million Package to Support Ukraine’s Air Defense System**
The US State Department has given the green light for a potential Foreign Military Sale to Ukraine, aimed at supporting the country’s HAWK Phase III missile system. The package, worth an estimated $172 million, includes a range of equipment and services that will help sustain Ukraine’s air defense capabilities.
**What’s in the Package?**
The sale covers a broad range of items, including five-ton cargo trucks, spare parts, and the refurbishment and overhaul of air defense fire units. It also provides tool kits, test equipment, and additional support items, along with technical documentation, training, and assistance from US government and contractor representatives.
**Strengthening Ukraine’s Defense Capabilities**
The proposed sale is intended to enhance Ukraine’s self-defense capabilities, which will help the country counter current and future threats. It is also expected to bolster regional security without altering the overall military balance in the region.
**No Negative Impact on US Defense Readiness**
The State Department has confirmed that the sale would have no negative impact on US defense readiness. The principal contractors for the potential sale include Sielman Corporation, RTX Corporation (formerly Raytheon), and PROJECTXYZ.
**Implementation and Contractors**
Implementation of the sale will require temporary duty travel for about five US government representatives and 15 contractor personnel to Ukraine. The State Department has also approved a separate package worth $150 million for Ukraine, covering Bradley infantry fighting vehicles and their maintenance, repair, and overhaul capabilities.
