**Russian Teacher and War Veteran Gennady Starunov Killed in Ukraine**
A tragic update to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has been confirmed by school officials. Gennady Starunov, a physical education teacher from Moscow who was named “Teacher of the Year” in 2022, has lost his life while serving in the Russian military.
Starunov, a junior sergeant, had been mobilized to serve in October 2022 and was training at a military base in Belarus alongside other troops. Before his deployment, he taught at Marshal Chuikov School in Moscow. His death, though confirmed by school officials, has not released any details about the location or circumstances of his passing.
What’s noteworthy is that Starunov actively supported Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and documented his experiences on social media through a Telegram blog titled “Frontline Notes.” He even met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in May 2025 to discuss his work. Putin reportedly praised Starunov for his contributions both on the battlefield and online.
Starunov’s death is a grim reminder of the human cost of war. Russia has suffered significant losses since its invasion began, with more than 119,000 verified deaths reported by independent media outlets as of July 17. Ukraine’s General Staff estimates that Russia has lost nearly 1.04 million troops, numbers that align closely with Western intelligence assessments.
As the conflict continues to escalate, it’s essential for leaders on both sides to acknowledge the true human toll and work towards a peaceful resolution. The loss of lives like Starunov’s serves as a poignant reminder of the need for diplomatic efforts to bring an end to this devastating war.
