A former high-ranking police official from Ukraine has been found dead under mysterious circumstances in a Spanish coastal town, sparking concerns about his possible involvement with Russian defectors. Ihor Hrushevskyi, 61, was discovered floating face down in the swimming pool of a residential complex in Villajoyosa, Alicante province, on June 29.
According to reports by El Espanol, Hrushevskyi’s body showed no signs of violence, but witnesses noted that he was bleeding from one ear. This has led investigators to suspect that it might have been a cerebral hemorrhage or stroke. Despite efforts to revive him, Hrushevskyi was declared dead at the scene.

Hrushevskyi’s death is particularly intriguing given his background as a senior official in Ukraine’s Department for Combating Organized Crime. His role involved fighting organized crime units in various regions, including Cherkasy and Kirovohrad oblasts in the early 1990s. These units were disbanded in 2015 as part of police reforms.
Interestingly, Hrushevskyi’s death occurred in the same residential complex where Russian pilot Maksim Kuzminov was assassinated last year. Kuzminov had defected to Ukraine with a military helicopter in 2023 and was found shot dead in a garage at the complex in February 2024.
