**Ukraine’s President Zelensky Holds Strategic Call with French Leader Macron**
In a crucial conversation, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron on July 18 about the front-line situation and Ukraine’s most urgent defense needs. The hour-long call was described by Zelensky as “very substantive” and demonstrated France’s willingness to assist Ukraine in its fight against Russia.
**France’s Commitment to Supporting Ukraine**
During the call, Zelensky thanked Macron for his “truly strategic vision” and expressed gratitude for France’s readiness to provide air defense systems, drone interceptors, and other essential capabilities. The Ukrainian President also welcomed France’s agreement to supply missiles for SAMP/T systems and fund interceptor drones.
**France Refuses to Join NATO-Led Initiative**
Interestingly, France declined to participate in a new NATO-led initiative that would have seen the alliance purchase U.S.-made air defense systems and deliver them to Ukraine. This decision was reportedly made due to Macron’s push for European nations to strengthen their own defense industries by purchasing domestically produced arms.
**France Expands Pilot Training Program**
Zelensky confirmed that France has agreed to expand pilot training for Mirage fighter jets, which were part of a military aid package announced by France in June. Ukraine first deployed the jets in March and used them to repel a Russian aerial attack.
**Coalition of the Willing Update**
The two leaders also discussed progress within the so-called coalition of the willing, jointly led by France and the U.K., and reviewed implementation of agreements reached during their recent meeting. Zelensky praised France’s role in helping shape the European Union’s 18th sanctions package against Russia.
**Macron’s Statement on EU Sanctions**
In a separate statement, Macron emphasized that Europe’s security, freedom, and future are closely tied to Ukraine’s fate. He welcomed the EU’s adoption of an unprecedented new package of sanctions against Russia and called for real global pressure to be put on Russia to obtain an unconditional ceasefire and negotiate a just and lasting peace.
**Zelensky’s Call for Global Pressure**
