**Sweden and EU Express Concerns Over Human Rights Situation in Georgia**
On July 11, the Georgian chargé d’affaires was summoned to the Swedish Foreign Ministry. The meeting was a result of Sweden’s growing concern about the human rights situation in Georgia. In a social media post, Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Stenergard wrote that her country is seriously concerned about the deteriorating human rights situation in Georgia.
**International Pressure Mounts**
The Swedish government is not alone in its concerns. On July 11, Sweden joined 16 other European countries and the EU High Representative in a joint statement expressing deep concern about the “deteriorating situation” in Georgia. The leaders were particularly worried about the jailing of opposition politicians and government critics.
**UK Also Speaks Out**
The British Foreign Office has also spoken out against the Georgian Dream government’s crackdown on civil society, independent media, and political opposition. On June 30, they summoned the Georgian chargé d’affaires to protest these actions. The UK warned that if democratic standards are not upheld, further action may be taken.
**EU Set to Discuss Situation**
The EU Foreign Affairs Council is set to meet on July 15 to discuss the situation in Georgia. They will consider possible measures in response to the growing repression by the authorities. This meeting comes at a time when international pressure on the Georgian government is mounting.
