**Media Regulator Fines TV Channels, but Imposes No Penalties**
Georgia’s state media regulator, the Communication Commission (ComCom), has found two critical TV channels, Formula TV and TV Pirveli, in violation of broadcasting law for using language that questioned the legitimacy of the ruling Georgian Dream government. However, despite finding these violations, ComCom did not impose any penalties on the channels.
**New Laws Give Regulator More Power**
The decision was made after a review by ComCom of complaints filed by the ruling Georgian Dream party against the two TV channels. The complaints were based on new amendments to the country’s broadcasting law that give ComCom more power to regulate media content and impose sanctions for violations, including breaches of “fairness and impartiality” principles.
**Critics Fear Precedent-Setting Decision**
The rulings have been met with concern from critics who fear they may set a dangerous precedent. The TV channels reported being sued by Georgian Dream in June over using certain terms to describe the government and its officials. ComCom Head Kakhi Bekauri thanked the GD for filing the complaint and encouraged others to do the same during the review.
**Broad Legislative Crackdown on Freedom of Press**
The amendments to the Broadcasting Law come as part of a broader legislative crackdown on freedom of the press and freedom of expression in Georgia. Critics argue that this legislation is aimed at silencing, censoring, and eliminating independent TV channels. The sanctions for content violations can range from verbal warnings to eventual revocation of the broadcasting license.
**Channels’ Representatives Express Concern**
Nodar Meladze of TV Pirveli said during the review that the first such review “aims to set some precedents.” This concern is shared by many in Georgia, who see these actions as an attempt to limit freedom of expression and independent media.
