**Opposition Leader’s Bold Move: A New Form of Struggle**
In a bold move, Elene Khoshtaria, the leader of Georgia’s opposition Droa party, has announced a hunger strike. She claims it is a “new form of struggle” to challenge the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party.
Khoshtaria made her announcement on June 27 in front of the parliament building in Tbilisi. She vowed not to leave Rustaveli Avenue, where ongoing protests against GD’s government have been taking place. The protests erupted after GD announced its decision to halt EU accession plans in late November.
**A Call for Revolution**
Khoshtaria addressed the ruling party directly, saying: “If you can’t see the value of life, the value of freedom… here’s my life, here’s my freedom too — and you still can’t beat us.” She emphasized that the only way to bring about change is through revolution and the overthrow of the current government from the streets.
The opposition leader also highlighted the tragic cases of protesters who have lost family members while in custody. At least three inmates have died since their arrest, with the most recent case being the death of a father whose son, Onise Tskhadadze, is currently on trial for group violence.
**A Message to the People**
Khoshtaria’s statement to the people was clear: “I am ready to sacrifice myself against the regime — and I will.” She acknowledged that she cannot dictate when or how others should take action, but her example shows her commitment to fighting for a cause she believes in.
The move comes as six opposition leaders have been sentenced to several months in prison for refusing to appear before the Tsulukiani Commission. Two more are awaiting final rulings while in pre-trial custody.
**A Long-Term Struggle**
Khoshtaria’s hunger strike is a long-term struggle that aims to challenge the GD government’s authority and bring about change from within. The opposition leader has shown remarkable courage in taking on the regime, even if it means putting her own life at risk.
