**Ukraine Imposes New Sanctions on Russian and Chinese Entities Involved in Shahed Drone Production**
In a move to counter Russia’s escalating drone attacks, Ukraine has introduced new sanctions against 52 Russian citizens and 34 Russian companies, as well as one Chinese entity involved in the production of Shahed-type drones. President Volodymyr Zelensky signed the decree on June 27, imposing severe restrictions on individuals and legal entities targeted by the sanctions.
The move comes as Russia has launched hundreds of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) against Ukrainian cities over the past weeks, with estimates suggesting upwards of 400-500 drones have been used per night. The Shahed-type drones, originally designed in Iran, have become a defining tool of the war, used by both Ukraine and Russia for surveillance, long-range strikes, and tactical battlefield advantage.
The sanctions imposed by Ukraine will make it impossible for individuals and legal entities targeted to do business or trade in Ukraine. Their assets are blocked, access to public and defense procurement is restricted, and entry into Ukrainian territory is denied. The sanctions also include restrictions on capital withdrawals from the country.
Andrii Yermak, head of the Presidential Office, explained that the sanctions primarily target enterprises and individuals collaborating with a Shahed manufacturing facility located in the town of Yelbuga in Russia’s Tatarstan. Russia has produced thousands of Iranian-designed Shahed drones since the fall of 2022, using them extensively against Ukraine.
The use of drones has become a hallmark of modern warfare, with both sides employing them for various purposes. The new sanctions imposed by Ukraine are a clear response to Russia’s escalating drone attacks and demonstrate the country’s determination to counter these threats.
In a separate move earlier in the day, President Zelensky signed a decree to coordinate sanctions against Russia with international partners, particularly the European Union and the Group of Seven (G7). This decision is part of Ukraine’s efforts to strengthen its position on the world stage and demonstrate its commitment to countering Russian aggression.
As the war continues to escalate, it remains to be seen how these new sanctions will impact Russia’s ability to produce and use Shahed-type drones. One thing is certain, however: Ukraine will continue to take bold steps to protect itself against these threats and ensure the safety of its citizens.
