**Netherlands and Belgium Provide Minehunter Vessels to Ukraine**
In a significant boost to maritime security in the Black Sea, the Netherlands and Belgium have handed over two minehunter vessels to Ukraine. The official handover ceremony took place earlier this month in Zeebrugge, Belgium, but was disclosed only later due to security concerns.
According to Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans, the vessels involved are the Belgian ship BNS Narcis and the Dutch Zr.Ms. Vlaardingen. Brekelmans emphasized that these minehunters will play a crucial role in safeguarding trade routes and global food supply in the region. He noted that Ukrainian crews and technicians were trained “in record time” to ensure the vessels’ readiness for deployment.
The Netherlands has been a key supporter of Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022, providing Kyiv with over €8.4 billion ($9.4 billion) in combined military, financial, and humanitarian assistance. Belgium has also allocated significant funds, including over €2 billion (about $2.2 billion), for the same purpose.
**A Vital Contribution to Black Sea Security**
The delivery of these minehunters comes at a critical time as Ukraine’s maritime security remains under threat from Russia’s actions in the Black Sea region. The major ports of Odesa and the shipping lanes are essential to Ukraine’s economy, and their continued functioning is vital for the country’s economic survival.
Brekelmans stressed that while Ukraine may not win the war at sea, it can certainly lose the war there if not provided with necessary support. He emphasized the importance of maintaining maritime security and free passage in the region.
**Short-Range Drone Attacks Threaten Civilians**
In other news from Ukraine, short-range drone attacks have become a significant threat to civilians in frontline regions, killing at least 395 people and injuring over 2,600 between February 2022 and April 2025, according to UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine.
**Global Support for Ukraine Continues**
The international community continues to demonstrate its support for Ukraine. The European Union has extended sanctions against Russia, while the United States has committed to providing significant financial aid. International partners have also pledged €42.5 million ($45.7 million) to repair the protective arch over Chornobyl’s destroyed reactor.
