**Italy Commits $1.6 Million to Help Ukraine Clear Landmines**

The Italian government has made a significant contribution to the humanitarian effort in Ukraine, pledging 1.5 million euros (approximately $1.6 million) to support demining efforts in the war-torn country.

This funding will be used by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to clear land contaminated by mines and explosive remnants of war, allowing Ukrainian communities to safely return to their homes and land. The Italian government’s donation was formalized during a ceremony in Kyiv on June 23, attended by high-level officials from Italy, the UN, and Ukraine.

**Demining: A Crucial Step Towards Recovery**

The importance of demining efforts cannot be overstated, according to Italian Ambassador Carlo Formosa. “Demining is not just a technical operation; it’s a deeply humanitarian act that combines cooperation and innovation to restore hope in Ukraine,” he said. The ambassador emphasized that the project is not only a response to the emergency but also a step towards recovery, allowing farmers to return to their land, children to play safely, and families to use roads without fear.

**A Major Challenge Ahead**

Ukraine faces one of the world’s largest demining challenges, with approximately 137,000 square kilometers (52,900 square miles) of land contaminated by mines and explosive remnants of war. While significant progress has been made since late 2022, when over 20% of potentially mined land was cleared, much work remains to be done.

**International Support Crucial**

Ukrainian officials stress that continued international support and funding are critical to accelerating clearance efforts. Currently, 112 certified demining operators, including eight international groups, are active in Ukraine, with a combined capacity of over 9,000 personnel, 278 specialized vehicles, and more than 13,000 metal detectors.

The Italian government’s donation is a welcome boost to these efforts, demonstrating the importance of international cooperation in addressing this major humanitarian challenge.
