**Government Probes Corruption in Economy Ministry, PM Stresses Commitment to Anti-Corruption Efforts**
The Georgian government is investigating alleged corruption within the Ministry of Economy. Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze recently addressed a question about whether Vice-Prime Minister Levan Davitashvili and General Secretary Kakha Kaladze were being questioned in connection with the case.
According to the PM, however, no one doubts Davitashvili’s integrity. The investigation centers around individual activities within the Ministry of Economy, specifically focusing on Romeo Mikautadze, a former Deputy Minister charged with abuse of official authority and legalization of illegal income.
**Prioritizing Anti-Corruption Efforts**
Despite being unable to delve into specifics about the case, PM Kobakhidze emphasized that combating corruption remains one of the government’s top priorities. In fact, he stated that the goal is ambitious: ranking among the top three countries in Europe for minimal corruption levels.
To achieve this goal, significant changes have been implemented within the government and authorities. The Prime Minister assured the public that everything will be done to combat corruption fully, as it hinders the country’s development.
**Court Hearing Scheduled**
Today, a court hearing is scheduled to discuss the imposition of a preventive measure against Romeo Mikautadze. According to his lawyer, the former Deputy Minister does not plead guilty. The prosecution claims that Mikautadze systematically abused his official powers and obtained large amounts of income by legalizing 2,556,192 GEL in illegal and unjustified income.
As the investigation unfolds, it remains to be seen how this high-profile case will impact the country’s efforts to reduce corruption.
