**EU and Allies to Toughen Sanctions on Russia, Macron Says**
The European Union and its allies are ready to take a tougher stance against Russia, French President Emmanuel Macron announced at the Group of Seven (G7) summit in Canada. The move comes as Russia launched one of its worst attacks on Kyiv since the start of its full-scale war against Ukraine.
Macron spoke out in solidarity with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the people of Ukraine, who were hit by massive Russian strikes just hours before. “We stand in solidarity with the Ukrainian people,” Macron said on social media. “We are determined to increase pressure on Russia to accept the immediate and unconditional ceasefire that Ukraine is ready for.”
The G7 leaders met in Kananaskis, Canada, from June 15-17, discussing a range of topics including Russia’s war against Ukraine. As they gathered, Russia launched a devastating drone and missile attack on Kyiv, killing 16 people and injuring at least 134.
**Strengthening Sanctions**
The EU is proposing much tougher sanctions than the US has imposed on Russia, Macron said. Europe is working in close coordination with Canada, Japan, and the UK to strengthen the sanctions. Several countries, including Canada and the UK, introduced additional sanctions on Russia as the G7 summit was ongoing.
Canada also announced a new military aid package for Ukraine, worth $1.5 billion. The move is seen as a significant boost to Ukraine’s efforts to defend itself against Russian aggression.
**Zelensky Attends Summit**
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky attended the summit and met with various leaders, including Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. However, he left early due to Russia’s attack on Kyiv. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the attack, calling it a “massive and brutal strike” timed deliberately to coincide with the G7 summit.
Zelensky described the drone and missile assault as “one of the most horrifying attacks on Kyiv.” The attack saw Moscow’s forces launch large numbers of drones and missiles at Ukraine’s capital, causing widespread destruction and loss of life.
**Analysis**
The strengthening of sanctions by the EU and its allies is a significant development in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The move is seen as a way to increase pressure on Russia to accept a ceasefire and return to the negotiating table.
However, it remains to be seen whether the strengthened sanctions will have the desired effect. Russia has shown itself to be resistant to previous rounds of sanctions, and it may continue to ignore international pressure.
One thing is certain: the people of Ukraine are in dire need of international support and protection. The EU’s decision to strengthen sanctions is a step in the right direction, but more needs to be done to bring an end to this devastating conflict.
