**UK and Allies Unveil New Sanctions Against Russia**
The United Kingdom, along with its allies, is set to impose new sanctions on Russia aimed at restricting President Vladimir Putin’s war efforts. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced the measures, which are designed to increase economic pressure on the Kremlin to demonstrate a commitment to peace.
According to Sir Keir, the sanctions package will target Russia’s energy revenues and reduce the funds available for its war efforts in Ukraine. The move is intended to “squeeze” Russia’s economy and limit its ability to finance its military activities.
**US Holds Back on Sanctions**
However, it seems unlikely that the United States will join the UK and other allies in imposing new sanctions on Russia. Former President Donald Trump expressed opposition to further measures during a recent G7 summit in Canada. Mr. Trump argued that sanctions come at a significant cost to the US economy, stating, “You’re talking about billions and billions of dollars. Sanctions are not that easy.”
Mr. Trump also suggested that he would wait for a deal between Russia and Ukraine to be reached before considering new sanctions. This stance is in contrast to his predecessors, including former President Barack Obama, who expelled Russia from the G7 group of major economies in 2014 following Russia’s annexation of Crimea.
**Ukraine Suffers Overnight Attack**
In other developments, Ukrainian officials reported that 16 people were injured after a wave of drone and missile attacks struck buildings across Kyiv overnight. The incident is just one example of the ongoing violence and instability in Ukraine, where Russian forces have been engaged in a conflict with Ukrainian forces for months.
**Limited Information Released on Sanctions**
The UK government has released limited information about the contents of the new sanctions package, citing the fact that the G7 group has only just begun finalizing the measures. A No 10 spokesman stated that it would be “premature” to release more details at this stage.
As tensions between Russia and Ukraine continue to escalate, the international community is watching closely for any signs of progress towards a peaceful resolution. The new sanctions imposed by the UK and its allies are designed to put pressure on Russia to reconsider its actions in Ukraine.
