**Russia’s Ongoing Attacks on Kharkiv Leave Trail of Destruction**
The city of Kharkiv in Ukraine has been a frequent target of Russian shelling, with devastating consequences for its residents. According to Mayor Ihor Terekhov, every new attack results in thousands of broken windows and significant damage to buildings.
**A Record-Breaking 50,000 Windows Broken**
Terekhov revealed that the need for replacement windows now exceeds 50,000, with each strike adding another thousand or more to this number. In fact, the record was set when over 5,000 windows were broken in just one attack. This staggering figure highlights the scale of destruction caused by Russia’s aggression.
**Challenges in Rebuilding and Recovery**
While municipal services are working tirelessly to seal off building envelopes and ensure residents’ safety, the process is becoming increasingly difficult due to a lack of resources. The mayor stated that charitable organizations are providing significantly fewer construction materials than in previous years, making it harder for the city to recover.
**Volunteers Step Up to Help**
Despite these challenges, volunteers have been actively helping municipal workers to clear the damage, especially in hard-to-reach buildings. In one instance, a 24-story building in the Saltivka district was damaged during a night shelling on June 12. Construction materials had to be carried up manually as the elevators were without power.
**Community Spirit Remains Strong**
The mayor emphasized that despite the difficulties, Kharkiv residents are uniting and supporting municipal and emergency services after each attack. He recalled an incident where a local resident brought sandwiches to workers clearing damage on Hymnaziyna Embankment during a morning shelling. This heartwarming gesture showcases the resilience and community spirit of Kharkiv’s residents.
