**EU Creates Special Envoy Position to Help Ukrainian Refugees**
The European Union has created a new position, special envoy for Ukrainians in the bloc, and has appointed Ylva Johansson, former European Commissioner for Home Affairs, to fill it. This development was reported by POLITICO on June 12.
According to sources close to the Commission, Johansson will oversee the EU’s long-term strategy for Ukrainian refugees currently residing in the EU. As a seasoned diplomat, Johansson has extensive experience working with Ukraine. She previously visited the country several times, including a refugee camp on the border with Romania. Johansson was also awarded the Ukrainian Order of Merit in September 2024.
**Helping Refugees Transition and Integrate**
As special envoy, Johansson will be responsible for implementing EU initiatives aimed at helping Ukrainian refugees transition into permanent legal statuses or return home. This effort includes the launch of “unity hubs” – information centers jointly managed with the Ukrainian government. These hubs will provide support to Ukrainian refugees as they integrate with their host countries in the EU or prepare to repatriate to Ukraine.
Germany, which has taken in over 1 million Ukrainian refugees since Russia’s invasion, has committed to establishing unity hubs in Berlin. The hubs will offer Ukrainians access to educational and career opportunities both in Germany and Ukraine.
**EU Extends Temporary Protection**
The European Commission recently extended temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees who fled the EU following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. According to Eurostat, over 4.26 million Ukrainians currently hold temporary protection status in the EU as of April 2025.
This development is a significant step forward in addressing the needs of Ukrainian refugees and ensuring their safe transition back home or into permanent residence in the EU. As the situation on the ground continues to evolve, it’s essential that international aid and diplomatic efforts remain focused on supporting those affected by the conflict.
