In December 2024, Canada promised to deliver assault rifles confiscated from civilians to Ukraine. However, over a year later, not a single weapon has been sent to Ukrainian forces. The Canadian government has purchased over 12,000 banned firearms through its buyback program, but it still needs to determine how many of these can be transferred to Ukraine.
**The Government’s Response**
When questioned about the delay, Max Watson, spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Safety, said that the government is “continuing to work with businesses to identify prohibited firearms in their inventory of NATO calibre that could be donated to Ukraine.” However, this response raises more questions than answers. If the government has been working on this issue for over a year, why haven’t any guns been delivered yet?
**The Bigger Picture**
This delay is not just about Canada’s failure to deliver on its promise; it’s also about the lives of Ukrainian soldiers and civilians who are fighting for their country. The longer it takes for Ukraine to receive these much-needed weapons, the more lives will be lost.
