US President Donald Trump has said he thinks a deal to end the war in Ukraine is on the cards, despite imposing sanctions on Russia.

Speaking at a press conference, Mr. Trump said that Ukrainian President Zelensky needs to get everything ready for him to sign off on a potential peace agreement.

“I think he’s working hard to get that done,” Mr. Trump said.

Mr. Trump has been engaged in talks with Russian leader Vladimir Putin over the past few weeks to broker a ceasefire deal. The two leaders spoke by phone in February, and there have been reports of plans for them to meet in person to discuss a potential peace agreement.

The US president has imposed sanctions on Russia, including restrictions on imports and exports, and has given Moscow until 8 August to agree to a ceasefire or face further action.

There was no announcement of further sanctions on Russia from the White House on Friday.
