**Ukrainian Forces Hold Ground Against Russian Advance**
The situation on the front lines in Donetsk Oblast is becoming increasingly complex, according to the Ukrainian General Staff. Despite claims from some sources that Russian troops had made significant gains near Dobropillia and Pokrovsk, the military has denied these reports, saying that their units are still engaged in heavy defensive battles.
In a statement released on August 12, the General Staff described the situation as “dynamic” but maintained that Ukrainian forces were taking effective measures to halt Russia’s advance. This contradicts claims from battlefield monitoring group DeepState that Russian troops had pushed towards the Dobropillia-Kramatorsk highway and even pierced Ukrainian defenses.
However, military spokesperson Victor Tregubov explained that small groups of Russian soldiers often infiltrate Ukrainian positions, but these incursions are typically short-lived and do not result in significant territory being captured. He emphasized that such events look very different from how they appear on a map, with only a handful of soldiers involved.
The Ukrainian military also accused Russia of exaggerating minor gains into larger battlefield successes through its media. This is not the first time that Ukraine has made this claim against Russia’s reporting on the conflict.
**Russian Tactics**
Maksym Bakulin, spokesperson for the 14th National Guard Brigade, described Russian tactics in the area as involving human wave assaults supported by artillery and guided aerial bombs. Favorable weather conditions have allowed Russian troops to hide in forested areas and move equipment forward, prompting Ukraine to intensify drone surveillance.
The fighting has intensified ahead of a planned meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 15. Russia is likely seeking to improve its position before potential peace talks.
**Evacuations Remain Danger**
Donetsk Oblast remains one of the most fiercely contested sectors, with Moscow concentrating its main offensive efforts since March. Ukrainian brigades, weakened by manpower shortages, continue to face pressure in the area. Evacuations remain dangerous due to repeated Russian attacks on civilians.
